Scrum Alliance® Welcomes New Board Member Peter Behrens!

The Scrum Alliance® Board of Directors election has closed and the results are in! Peter Behrens will take on the Scrum Certified Member (SCM) Elected Director seat being vacated by Pete Deemer. Peter garnered 43.05% of the total votes, while Ethan Huang and Tamara Sulaiman Runyon claimed 35.51% and 21.43% respectively. 

We would like to thank Harvey Wheaton and Chris Guzikowski, who are ending their board terms, for their leadership, service, and dedication during their time on the Scrum Alliance board and wish them both well in the future. Pete Deemer will remain on the board, as he has accepted the open Board Elected Director position vacated by Harvey Wheaton. 

Board Chairman Harvey Wheaton said, “This is an exciting time for Scrum Alliance as we continue to grow at a rapid rate. As a board, we have committed to focus on organizational transformation as well as the support we already provide to individuals and teams as they adopt and use Scrum. I'm excited about the opportunities in front of us and energized by the amazing support we get from our members at all levels. Together we will certainly continue to transform the world of work!”

Newly elected board member Peter Behrens said, "I am honored to have been elected to serve as a member of the Scrum Alliance Board of Directors. I appreciate the support of this growing global community and will do my best to represent its diversity. I also want to thank the other candidates, Ethan and Tamara, for stepping forward for this position. I truly believe that Scrum Alliance is the leader in transforming the world of work and I will work to continue to transform Scrum Alliance to meet the challenges ahead. Thank you!”

Pete Behrens is a Certified Scrum Coach® (CSC) and Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) from Boulder, Colorado. Pete has been an active leader in Scrum Alliance for 10 years and was a founding member of the CSC program. He has also been active with ongoing development of coaching programs and retreats and with leading the formation of a new set of Agile Leadership Learning Objectives. As president of Trail Ridge Consulting, Pete guides organizations and leaders in their Agile growth and maturity.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Scrum Alliance membership, I welcome Peter into his new role and wish Harvey and Chris all the best. I also want to extend my sincerest thanks to all of this year's candidates for their desire to help guide Scrum Alliance toward a bright future as we work together to transform the world of work in 2016 and beyond.

A Letter from the CEO - October 2015

Over the last few newsletters, we've discussed the strategic changes and improvements we're making to build up our value proposition. We continue to listen to the community and learn from our members while working together to enhance the member experience.

One of the many questions we get from students after they take a Certified ScrumMaster® course is, "How do I get a job as a ScrumMaster now?" Recently, we have taken big strides toward partnering with Agile companies, both within corporate America and globally. We want to offer our members a front-row seat to find and apply for jobs where they can showcase their Scrum and Agile expertise.

By the end of 2015, we will launch our new and improved, which will help Agile professionals and organizations connect to create both career and organizational growth opportunities. This new feature will continue to be a membership benefit from Scrum Alliance.

As we increase our features and relationships with top Agile organizations, we look forward to 2016, when we'll launch a new event, the AgileCareers Networking Expo. This will go hand in hand with our Global Scrum Gathering Orlando. Visit, also on Twitter and Facebook, and sign up for news alerts so you will be among the first informed with details about this new event and how you can get involved.

Additionally, we will be launching a brand-new publication at our Gathering in Orlando, AgileVox magazine, offered in print as well as in an interactive, online version with additional video content.

A Letter from the CEO - September 2015

When was the last time you left the office and spent the entire day interacting with others, face to face? For many, that's a rare occurrence. Making human connections, shaking hands, and sharing ideas and challenges reenergizes and inspires us. 
Scrum Alliance is continually working on membership benefits, and I want to highlight our member opportunities that provide this interpersonal collaboration that is essential to our continuous growth. Our Global and Regional Gatherings have been held in many locations around the world. The locations of these events change each year to allow as many people as possible the chance to attend.  However, once you have been to a Gathering, you know that location has little bearing; participants travel from around the world to network and learn! 
Most recently, global economic growth has been led by the BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and China are projected to be the fastest-growing market economies, and the wealthiest, by 2050.
While working to grow our mission globally and Transform the World of Work, Scrum Alliance has held gatherings in Brazil, China, and India during this past year. 
I had the great pleasure of attending the Regional Scrum Gathering® Rio in August. While there, I was able to meet many of our passionate members as well as representatives from 12 corporations, ranging in size from very small to the largest bank in Brazil! Shortly after my visit to Rio, I attended the Global Scrum Gathering® Shanghai. This was an incredible experience and a very successful event, filled with educational sessions, attended by an energetic audience, and providing a great networking opportunity for all. 
Attending our Gatherings, talking with our members face to face, and meeting with local organizations in these countries allows me to continue to learn the needs of our global community. 
Networking and collaborating with others is what helps us grow, both personally and professionally. If you can't travel by plane, I encourage you to look locally and even virtually. Beyond Global and Regional Gatherings, our Sponsored Events and User Groups provide plenty of opportunities for sharing and learning. Also, don’t forget about our virtual webinars, member articles, and other online resources. We are excited to announce Manuel Gonzalez as our new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is the first time SCRUM ALLIANCE® has appointed a CEO and signifies our organization’s increasing scale and ambition as we seek to guide organizations to be prosperous and sustainable through the use of Scrum.

“Scrum Alliance’s Board of Directors had many discussions about the search for a CEO and the skills we felt a good candidate would need to fill the role,” said Harvey Wheaton, Scrum Alliance Chairman of the Board. “We had more than 200 applicants for this position and spent many months searching and interviewing candidates to be sure we got the best person for the job. With Manny, we are confident we made the right choice.”

Manuel "Manny" Gonzalez is a strategic leader with more than 37 years' experience across a diverse range of business arenas. Starting his career in the hospitality hotel, food, and beverage industry, he worked his way from behind the scenes to become a leader in the cultural events business. Manny has spent time in marketing, finance, and operations both domestically and internationally and has a broad range of expertise in the nonprofit and corporate sectors.

“We are thrilled to have Manny join Scrum Alliance as our new CEO and believe he will bring great leadership to our organization,” said Wheaton. “His personality, background, and expertise are extremely well aligned with the way we work at Scrum Alliance. I look forward to working with him as we move Scrum Alliance into the next chapter of its growth and transformation.”

“I'm excited at this opportunity to come work with such an incredibly passionate and talented group of dedicated professionals and practitioners helping to transform the world of work,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez will join Scrum Alliance on April 27. He is relocating to Colorado from Texas, where he served as CEO for the National Society of Hispanic MBAs for the past five years. He is married and has two daughters in college.
